Steelers’ Justin Fields Gets Exposed For Having A Huge Red Flag: 'Very Hard To Coach This'
Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made waves with a significant trade for Justin Fields, following their offseason splash of acquiring Russell Wilson on a one-year deal at the veteran minimum. Yet, their quarterback acquisitions didn't halt there. The Steelers also brought in veteran backup quarterback Kyle Allen as well to complete their quarterback room.

Recognizing Fields' value and potential, it became an obvious choice for the Steelers. They secured Fields for a conditional sixth-round pick, potentially elevating to a fourth-round pick based on his playing time in the upcoming 2024 season. Steelers fans eagerly anticipate Fields' impact in Pittsburgh.

Longstanding NFL analyst Greg Cosell joined Rich Eisen on The Rich Eisen Show to dissect the Chicago Bears' decision to part ways with Fields, passing the torch to the anticipated top pick, Caleb Williams. Cosell supported the Bears' choice, expressing doubts about Fields' potential.

“You know I think Fields has played enough games. I believe he’s started 37 games in this league and one of the things that I think that stands out, it’s very hard to coach this. Believe me, you’ve had these conversations and I’ve had these conversations. It’s very hard to teach someone to see things clearly when they really don’t just innately.”

Fields has already started 38 games in his relatively brief NFL tenure. However, he has secured victories in only 10 of those matchups, leaving him on the losing end in 28 games. This significant number of losses has raised concerns. Cosell specifically highlighted Fields' struggle to perceive situations clearly, which has led to frustration among coaches.

“I think that’s one of the major issues with Justin Fields that may never change. If that doesn't change, he will always be a spectacular player who can make special plays and will have special plays, but may not be exactly what you want at the quarterback position long-term.”

The uncertainty surrounding Fields is understandable given his mixed statistical performance: 40 touchdowns juxtaposed with 30 interceptions. Cosell succinctly captured the dichotomy of watching Fields in action – moments of sheer brilliance followed by critical errors that shed light on why the Bears struggled during his tenure.

Despite his passing struggles, Fields remains one of the NFL's premier athletes, showcasing remarkable prowess on the ground. While his passing game has had its challenges, glimpses of exceptional throws at the NFL level offer promise. Cosell acknowledges Fields' exceptional talent but questions his clarity in reading the game.

Interestingly, Cosell presents a somewhat conflicting view by suggesting Fields might be the Steelers' optimal choice, especially under the guidance of their new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith. With a potential shift towards a ground-oriented offensive strategy, Fields' elite running abilities could become a key asset for the Steelers.

Steelers’ Quarterback Competition Set To Generate A Ton Of Buzz

The addition of a seasoned veteran like Wilson, boasting a Super Bowl victory and nine Pro Bowl appearances at the age of 35, injects both excitement and intrigue into the Steelers' quarterback situation. While Mike Tomlin has firmly designated Wilson as the primary quarterback for now, Fields will have an opportunity to vie for the starting role.

Fields possesses undeniable talent, and refining his passing game could unlock his immense potential. However, he must demonstrate improvement during practice and compete fiercely for the position. Despite currently serving as the backup, Fields must showcase the qualities that led the Bears to select him, aiming to fulfill their aspirations of finding a franchise quarterback.

Both Fields and Wilson are driven by a desire to validate their abilities in the NFL. This dynamic presents an exhilarating prospect for the Steelers, as they now boast two highly motivated and skilled quarterbacks on their roster, each striving to prove their merit in the league. Such competition is poised to elevate the team's performance and foster a culture of excellence in Pittsburgh.
