Patriots owner Robert Kraft discusses 'The Dynasty' criticisms

New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft spoke with reporters at the NFL owners' meetings on Tuesday and offered a unique review of Apple TV's "The Dynasty: New England Patriots" docuseries, which has become quite polarizing among fans and others associated with the Patriots.

"Well, I loved the first three episodes. I really liked [them]," Kraft said, as shared by Chris Mason of MassLive. "I felt bad that there was so much emphasis on the more controversial and let’s say challenging situations over the last 20 years. I wish they had focused more on our Super Bowl wins, our 21-game win streak (during the 2003-04 seasons)."

Some have criticized "The Dynasty" as a project that portrays Patriots head coach Bill Belichick as a villain and the main reason quarterback Tom Brady left the club as a free agent following the 2019 season. As Kraft mentioned on Tuesday, safeties Devin McCourty and Rodney Harrison are among former Patriots players who didn't like how Belichick was depicted and how the documentary "only hit anything that was negative."

"I felt bad there were players who gave hours and hours of interviews and they felt only the negativity," Kraft said. "...Although, I didn’t — I just heard quietly that they’ve all felt that way. Actually, there were some really prominent people that were interviewed for hours that never were used. So, little disappointed that there wasn’t more of a real positive approach. Especially for Patriots fans who have lived the experience with us."

Kraft and Belichick "mutually" agreed to part ways in January after the Patriots missed the playoffs for a third time since Brady's departure. On Tuesday, Kraft did well to sidestep a follow-up question regarding how "The Dynasty" treated the final years of Belichick's 24-season New England tenure.

"I feel so privileged that we had Bill here," Kraft said. He added that he looks "forward to the privilege of putting Bill into the Patriots Hall of Fame one day in the future."

Belichick is expected to pursue head coaching opportunities in January 2025, so a celebration at Gillette Stadium will be put on hold until the living legend, who turns 72 in April, retires for good.
